Turk and colleagues at the Senckenberg am Meer marine laboratory in Germany observed the burrowing of modern priapulids in controlled environments, recording behaviors previously unknown from the group that may suggest significant impact on seafloors when extrapolated 500 million years into the past.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the authors found that when given adequate subsurface space and sediment, priapulids will create burrows very similar in form to the trace fossil <em>Treptichnus pedum <\/em>\u2013 a little understood fossil which is used to mark the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary and thus the advent of our modern, animal-dominated biosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Turk described the study as \u201ca major step forward in our study of modern animals and environments to better understand fossil record questions,\u201d a discipline also known as \u2018neoichnology.\u2019 \u201cHere we\u2019ve shown that not only do priapulids create these burrows so similar in shape to those we find from 538 million years ago, but also that these newly documented behaviors may have had outsize impacts on their sedimentary environments via the downwards transport of oxygen and other nutrients,\u201d Turk added.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how these behaviors emerged and evolved can provide valuable insights into\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem\">early ecosystems and how life on Earth adapted to environmental changes. &#8220;Ecosystem engineering is a powerful concept in evolutionary biology,&#8221; said co-author Dr. Simon Darroch, research assistant professor at 国产原创. &#8220;It highlights how organisms, through their behavior, can modify their environments in ways that influence evolutionary pathways.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2947\" style=\"width: 467px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2947\" style=\"font-size: 19.2px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/295\/2024\/09\/10011418\/image3-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"A person on the deck of a research vessel, wearing a white hard hat, a blue and red jacket, and blue gloves.
