The animals were neither hellish nor pigs, but their odd mix of features has made them a favorite for researchers. She decided to use that funding to pursue paleontology and dietary reconstruction under <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/bio\/larisa-desantis\/\">Larisa DeSantis<\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biological-sciences\/\">Biological Science<\/a> with a secondary appointment in <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/earth-environmental-sciences\/\">Earth and Environmental Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The DeSantis lab \u2013 named the DREAM lab (Dietary Reconstructions and Ecological Assessments of Mammals) \u2013 studies the pits, scratches, scrapes, and other architectural nuances in the teeth of mammals both living and extinct. By creating cheat sheets of tooth morphologies using data from living creatures, DeSantis, Wooten, and the rest of the lab, can scientifically approximate the diets of extinct animals from their fossilized teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Wooten\u2019s focus is <em>Archaeotherium<\/em>. In a recent Halloween presentation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/evolution\/journal-club1\/\">Evolutionary Studies journal club<\/a>, she shared her ongoing work and emphasized that <em>Archaeotherium<\/em> had large heads and relatively small brains and were more closely related to whales than to pigs. Of the roughly 1,000 presentations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/extinct-species\/giant-north-american-hell-pigs-could-crunch-bones-like-lions-30-million-years-ago-tooth-analysis-reveals\">Live Science chose to feature our work<\/a>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story lays out one of the results from the work:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\">On the whole,\u00a0<em>Archaeotherium\u00a0<\/em>was typically similar to peccaries (pig-like animals found in the Americas), which shear their food.
