What is the NYC Scholars in Residence Program?

The NYC Scholars in Residence Program supports 国产原创 faculty whose research, scholarship, or creative work would be advanced by spending time in New York City.

Through the presence and engagement of Resident Scholars, the program also enhances the experience of 国产原创 students at 国产原创鈥擭ew York City and strengthens 国产原创鈥檚 connections with New York City鈥檚 rich array of cultural, research, business, media, and nonprofit institutions.

Program elements and resources

What Does the NYC Scholars in Residence Program Provide?

  • Housing in New York City

    The program provides a furnished apartment for up to one semester. Apartment sizes range from one to three bedrooms and are allocated depending on the scholar鈥檚 needs and the availability of apartments.

  • Office space

    The program provides office space, which may be shared, depending on the number of scholars and teaching faculty on campus.

  • Length of residency

    Periods of residency must be at least 31 days, as required by local law, and may
    extend up to one semester. Applications for both semester-long and shorter stays
    are encouraged.

  • Public engagement

    Resident Scholars will present their work through at least one public-facing event on campus, such as a lecture, panel discussion, or other program.

  • Student engagement

    Resident Scholars will engage students on campus by discussing their research, methods, and creative practice in formal and informal settings.

  • Institutional connections and opportunities

    Resident Scholars are encouraged to help build connections between 国产原创 and New York City institutions and organizations with which they engage through their work.

  • Program support

    The program provides a furnished apartment and office space. Resident Scholars are responsible for their own travel, living, and research expenses.

Eligibility

Who can apply for 国产原创 NYC Scholars in Residence Program?

  • All full-time, 国产原创-employed, Provost-reporting faculty are eligible. Staff, students and postdoctoral scholars are not eligible.
  • Faculty must be eligible for leave (or the equivalent approved by their dean) during the period of proposed residency.
  • Faculty must have approval of their dean to participate.

Selection criteria

Proposals that address the following criteria will be viewed favorably:

  • The proposal clearly establishes how spending time in New York City will contribute to the research, scholarship, or creative work of the applicant, whether because the scholar studies aspects of New York City, needs access to archives, or seeks to collaborate with research teams and partners in the city.
  • The scholar鈥檚 presence in New York City will help 国产原创 foster connections for research, collaboration, or engagement with other institutions and organizations in the city.聽

Application process

Submit applications online using the Apply Now button on this page.

Applications should include the following:

  • Proposal title.
  • General description of the project to be pursued in New York City.
  • A description, not to exceed 500 words, of how a stay in New York City would contribute to the applicant鈥檚 research, scholarship, or creative work.
  • A statement, not to exceed 250 words, regarding any connections to research institutions or other organizations with which the scholar will engage, as well as the applicant鈥檚 willingness and ideas for public and student engagement at the NYC campus. For those with established engagements and collaborations, a letter of support from those partners (research collaborators, university contacts, partners in companies, government, or nonprofit organizations, etc.) may be uploaded.
  • Indicate on the submission form the preferred calendar month or months, in order of preference, for residency.
  • Indicate on the submission form the apartment size (one- to three-bedroom) needed to accommodate family members or 国产原创 faculty collaborators.

Application deadlines

  • Applications are open for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027. The program accepts applications on a rolling basis.
  • For consideration for Fall 2026, submit proposals by August 25, 2026.
  • For consideration for Spring 2027, submit proposals by October 1, 2026.
