2026 Reapportionment Information

In Fall 2025, USAC leadership, with help from the Membership Committee, started the reapportionment process to ensure that USAC elected members represented the ¹ú²úÔ­´´ staff appropriately, as stated in the USAC bylaws.Ìý

Why Reapportionment?

  • The USAC bylaws state that reapportionment planning must begin in years ending with 0 and 5.Ìý
  • USAC must have one representative for every 35 university staff members in which the council serves.

Why do changes occur?

  • Shifts in staff levels around the university
  • Re-alignment of units and divisions
  • Creation of new units and divisions

  • When will the group changes go into affect?

    Group changes will go into affect July 1, 2026.Ìý

  • How will this impact Spring 2026 elections?

    Groups ending in even numbers will have elections during the Spring 2026 election cycle. The election will be reflective of the reapportionment group changes.Ìý

  • Will a special election be held for odd groups that gained representatives?

    Some odd groups will need a special election for their increase in members. Additional details will be shared for those groups.

    Special elections will not affect current representatives of those groups.

  • What happens to the current representatives of groups that lost representative positions? 

    No changes will occur at this time.Ìý

  • If I am moved to another group, will I need to run again?

    No, not unless your group is up for re-election.Ìý

  • My work unit changed groups. How am I affected?

    You will move to the new group with which your work unit now lives.Ìý

  • I am a staff member, not an elected USAC representative. How can I find my new representatives?

    This change will not go into effect until July 1, 2026. You can find your current USAC representative here: /usac/directory/.Ìý

  • How do I know if my group has been affected during reapportionment?

    USAC representatives will be sent an email regarding group changes the week of February 9.Ìý

    Individual USAC representatives will be contacted if reapportionment has directly affected them.Ìý

    ¹ú²úÔ­´´ staff will receive communication in early-March, ahead of elections.Ìý

    The website directory will be updated in late June.Ìý

  • How were decisions made regarding group changes and movement?

    In determining group moves and additions to the current model, USAC leadership aligned the updates with the business units and organizational structure. This approach provides greater clarity, consistency, and long-tern stability within our representation model.Ìý

    A full roster of university staff of which the council represents was assessed to ensure that USAC had the appropriate 1:35 ratio. Group representative additions or removals were based on the total number of staff in a given group.Ìý
